The Law of First Aid at Work

HSE will prosecute in cases where there is a significant risk, a disregard for establised standards or persistent poor compliance with the law.

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention.  For more details please refer to the HSE website on First Aid Legislation

TOP TIP

The best way to understand what arrangements you need to make for first aid are to undertake a first aid needs assessment.  This assessment will consider the circumstances of your workplace, workforce and the hazards and risks that may be present.  The findings will help you decide what first-aid arrangements you need to put in place.

The HSE has advised that when carrying out a first aid needs assessment, employers who identify a specific risk of life-threatening bleeding (e.g. those working in arboriculture, construction, glass work, agriculture or those who use dangerous machinery) should consider providing tourniquets and haemostatic dressings and ensure that their workplace first aiders are trained in their use.
